THE ART OF LIVING AND DYING
A glimpse of the Buddhist wisdom of Tibet, and its vision of life and death.
with Sogyal Rinpoche, world-renowned Buddhist teacher from Tibet and author of the highly acclaimed The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying; Founder and Spiritual Director, Rigpa.
and Dr Ian Gawler OAM, one of Australia's best known cancer survivors, pioneers in Mind-Body Medicine and advocates of a healthy lifestyle; Founder, The Gawler Foundation Director, Imagery Works.
This great and ancient tradition contains a whole range of powerful methods that help us to apply wisdom and compassion at every stage of living and dying. The fundamental message of these teachings is that, if we are prepared, there is tremendous hope, both in life and in death. They reveal to us the possibility of an astounding and finally boundless freedom, which is ours to work for now, during our lives.
With his remarkable gift for presenting the essence of Tibetan Buddhism in a way that is both authentic and profoundly relevant to the modern mind, Sogyal Rinpoche will lead the morning session with an exploration of the following:
how to understand the true message of death and impermanence
how to make the most of this precious life
the crucial importance of training the mind
the practice of meditation
the significance of the moment of death, how to offer our love to someone at the end of their life, and spiritual practice for ourselves and others as we come to die.
In the afternoon session Ian Gawler, pioneer in mind-body medicine, will guide participants in reflection on the morning teachings, emphasising how consideration of death and impermanence can serve to bring a deep appreciation of the preciousness of life and the urge to use it well. Guided meditation, discussion and practical strategies to integrate what we have learnt into our lives will be included.
